Three Richmond gymnasts have been chosen to represent Team BC in the upcoming Western gymnastics championships.
Richmond Gymnastics Association athletes Mira Hartfiel,15, Linnea Hartfiel, 13, and Anika Addison,13, will be joining Team BC for the Western Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships from April 22 to 26 in Whitehorse, Yukon.
Team BC will be competing against teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
Mira, who placed first in the senior category for the Team BC qualifiers, said she is excited to compete in the Westerns this year.
"I think it will be a very fun experience, and I'm so thankful for my coaches and teammates," she said.
Linnea and Anika earned first and second place, respectively, in the Canadian Competitive Program Level 8 Junior category during the trials, and both said they feel lucky and thankful for the opportunity to advance to the Western Championships.
"It was a tough competition at the trials, and even though I had a bit of a setback at one event, I pulled through, stayed focused and qualified. Now I just have to repeat the same at Westerns," said Anika.
Linnea added that she worked hard and is proud to represent Team BC and Richmond Gymnastics.
Hailey Liu,14, also with Richmond Gymnastics, will also be travelling with Team BC as an alternate in the senior category.
Furthermore, Veronika Pathak, lead coach of the Canadian Competitive Program at Richmond Gymnastics, was selected as team coach for Team BC alongside senior coaches Todd Millway and Pete Mitchell.
Pathak said they are very proud to have their own athletes qualifying for Team BC.
"It's a great achievement and a reflection of their hard work, consistency and resilience throughout the season," said Pathak.
"As they get ready for Western Canadian Championships, our focus remains on maintaining their confidence and keeping their performance steady and consistent," said Pathak.
"The other provinces also bring their best, and this is a meet where the best of the best and the most talented from Western provinces and territories compete."
